Who should take MCV4U online?

MCV4U supports more than one pathway. Whether you are heading to university, college, an apprenticeship or the skilled trades, or straight into the workplace, this credit counts toward your OSSD.

  • Students applying to engineering, science, mathematics, economics or business programs that list MCV4U as a required course
  • Students heading to college engineering technology programs or advanced skilled trades who want strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Students who expect to take university calculus, linear algebra or physics
  • Students who need a stronger MCV4U mark for their university average
  • Graduates and mature students completing a missing university prerequisite
  • Student-athletes and international students who need a flexible schedule

What you will learn

  • Rates of change: Connect average and instantaneous rates of change and develop the concept of the derivative.
  • Derivatives: Find derivatives of polynomial, sinusoidal, exponential, rational and radical functions using differentiation rules.
  • Applications of derivatives: Use derivatives to sketch curves and solve optimization and other real-world problems.
  • Geometry and algebra of vectors: Represent vectors geometrically and algebraically and apply vector operations in two and three dimensions.
  • Lines and planes: Represent lines and planes in three-dimensional space and solve problems involving their intersections.

Official Ontario course description

Calculus and Vectors, Grade 12, University (MCV4U)

This course builds on studentsโ€™ previous experience with functions and their developing understanding of rates of change. Students will solve problems involving geometric and algebraic representations of vectors and representations of lines and planes in three-dimensional space; broaden their understanding of rates of change to include the derivatives of polynomial, sinusoidal, exponential, rational, and radical functions; and apply these concepts and skills to the modelling of real-world relationships. Students will also refine their use of the mathematical processes necessary for success in senior mathematics. This course is intended for students who choose to pursue careers in fields such as science, engineering, economics, and some areas of business, including those students who will be required to take a university-level calculus, linear algebra, or physics course.

Prerequisite: Note: Advanced Functions, Grade 12, University Preparation, must be taken prior to or concurrently with Calculus and Vectors.
